MUMBAI, MAR 13 -
A week ago, Khairunissa Choudhari (50) would have passed off as a heavily pregnant woman. It was only after a number of tests that doctors realized she had a large tumour in her abdomen-large enough (17kg) to fill two buckets.
The Reay Road resident said she did not seek treatment and let the tumour grow as she had no pain. She thought the tumour was harmless until it was so big that she could hardly move.
"I started getting this knot about a year ago. Everybody said the treatment will be expensive so I never thought of getting it removed ," said Khairunissa, who lost her husband two years ago. "The tumour was benign. We realized we could remove the tumour through her vagina," said Dr Ashok Anand, professor of gynaecology at J J Hospital. "We first removed her uterus, after which we pulled out the tumour from her left ovary with a suction tube," said Anand, adding that more than 12 litres of liquid was removed from her abdomen.
The total mass removed weighed around 19kg along with the liquid. "When the patient came in, she weighed 60kg, now she weighs 41kg," said Anand.
